Don’t Be Left Out in the Cold! SMART Tips to Winterize Your Home
Wednesday, September 28, 2011
In spite of our current eighty degree days, cooler weather is coming, and with that weather comes increased utility bills as well. As the temperatures drop in the next few weeks, we will be posting some SMART (and easy!) tips for how to make your home more energy efficient and how to cut down on utility bills.
Tip Number 1: Replace or clean furnace filters.
Anybody can replace a furnace filter. Typically, you slide an old filter out of a slot where the air duct meets the furnace and slip a new filter into that slot. Changing your filter monthly allows your unit to run more efficiently which also saves you money! Filters can be purchased at any home improvement store and range in price from a few dollars for disposable filters to up to $25 for a reusable filter specially designed to remove allergens from the air.
Tip Number 2: Caulk and weatherstrip
Caulking and weatherstripping are relatively inexpensive ways to cut a home’s utility bills. Both weatherstripping and caulk costs about $10 or less and save a bundle on your heating expenses. Use caulk to fill in those gaps and cracks around windows, light switches, and electrical outlets. Use weatherstripping to seal gaps between a window and its frame as well as around doors. You can also purchase plastic or metal door jambs for $10 or less in order to fill gaps between a doorway and the floor.
