Labor Day Fun Around Baltimore

With Maryland schools starting after Labor Day, the first weekend in September is the perfect opportunity to make even more summer memories in Maryland. Here’s a list of our favorite local ideas to get you inspired.

The Maryland State Fair
No other event provides so much food, fun and family entertainment for so little! There are both tame and thrilling rides; classic and local foods; livestock, garden and home exhibits; thoroughbred racing; and even live national concerts, including Smash Mouth, Chris Lane and Jefferson Starship. Hit up this event through September 3rd at the State Fairgrounds in Timonium.

Maryland Week in Ocean City
I love a good bargain, and this last week of summer means Maryland Week in Ocean City with great discounts on hotels. For example, some are offering 15 to 25% discounts, depending on the length of your stay. Others are pairing discounted room rates with gift certificates to restaurants or amenities. So enjoy the last vestiges of the summer season and pack in a little more fun in the OC sun! Maryland week runs through the 9th.

National Hard Crab Derby & Fair
This unique crab-themed festival features crab races, crab cooking and picking contests, carnival rides, arts and crafts, live entertainment, beauty pageants, a parade and fireworks. Bring our mallets and break out the Old Bay! The event runs from August 27th to September 2nd at Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield on the Eastern Shore.

Rhythms & Reels
Join Baltimore City Recreation & Parks Department for the 3rd season of Rhythms & Reels, a free series of music & movies in our local recreation areas. On Friday, August 31st, bring the whole family to see “Wreck it Ralph” at the Recreation Center in Catonsville. Or, on Saturday, September 1st, watch my daughters’ favorite, “Despicable Me 3” at Lakeland Park in south Baltimore. Come hungry! There’s free popcorn.

Sunset Paddle on the Middle Branch
On Friday, August 31st from 7-9 pm, explore our waterways on a guided tour with the Recreation and Parks Department. You’ll likely to see fish, crabs and maybe even a great blue heron. There are 10 canoes and 10 kayaks, so RSVP early to reserve your spot in a boat! There’s a small fee for both residents and non-residents, but everything you need is provided for paddling.

Waterfront Wellness Series
Get healthy at the harbor with free local fitness classes. Meet at West Shore Park in downtown Baltimore from 7 to 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday morning for classes featuring yoga, bootcamp, dance and even just plain running.
